SimWorks Wind Simulator: SimHub Setup Guide
Share
Every SimWorks Wind Simulator arrives pre-configured and ready to use, tested before it leaves the workshop and supplied with the correct USB cable. Plug it in, open SimHub, and it works. None of this is needed unless you are troubleshooting or want to adjust how it behaves.
Worth knowing up front
The Wind Simulator appears in SimHub under the Arduino section rather than as a device with its own name. That is expected, not a fault. If you are hunting for a Wind Simulator entry in the device list, that is why you cannot find one.
What you need
- A SimWorks Wind Simulator and the USB-C cable it shipped with
- A Windows PC running SimHub
- A sim that SimHub supports, such as iRacing, Assetto Corsa Competizione or Le Mans Ultimate
Connect it to a port on the PC itself or a powered USB hub, and keep hold of the supplied cable. If you ever need to replace it, make sure the new one carries data rather than charge only, since a charge only cable looks exactly like a fault. The SimWorks USB-C data cable is the right type.
How to set up wind in SimHub with ShakeIt
Open ShakeIt Wind
In SimHub, choose ShakeIt Wind from the menu on the left. Everything to do with the Wind Simulator lives here, including the curve settings further down this page.
Open Output Configuration
Click Output Configuration at the top of the ShakeIt Wind page.
Assign the Arduino channels
Select Arduino, then set:
- Channel 1 → Right
- Channel 2 → Left
The channel numbers are listed on the My Hardware page, so check them there and match them up rather than assuming.
Check the profile
That is the configuration done. If anything feels wrong once you are driving, the first thing to re-check is that left and right are assigned the right way round in your wind profile.
How do I make the fans quieter?
Running the fans flat out is rarely what you want. Most of the useful sensation comes from the change in airflow rather than raw volume, and the top of the range mostly adds noise.
The fix is a curve, and it is set up in the same place as everything else: the ShakeIt Wind page in SimHub. Shaping the response so the fans ramp up more gently, and sit lower at the top end, keeps the effect where you can feel it while noticeably cutting both noise and power draw.
It is worth a few minutes of experimenting, since the right curve depends on how far the fans sit from your face and what you race.
Wind Simulator not working? Common fixes
Why is the Wind Simulator not showing in SimHub?
Look under the Arduino section. The Wind Simulator does not appear as a separately named device, which catches almost everyone out the first time. If it is not there at all, check the USB-C cable carries data rather than being charge only.
Why do the fans never spin while driving?
Check that the correct game is selected in SimHub and that telemetry is coming through. No telemetry means no wind, however well the channels are configured.
Why is the wind coming from the wrong side?
Channel 1 and channel 2 have been swapped. Go back into Output Configuration and check them against the numbers shown on My Hardware.
Why are the fans so loud?
Set up a curve on the ShakeIt Wind page, as above. Most setups end up quieter and feel no less convincing for it.
Wind Simulator support in the SimWorks Plugin
The Wind Simulator is configured through SimHub directly for now. Plugin support is planned, which will bring it in alongside the other SimWorks hardware. If you also run an iFlag, an iFlag Slim or an LED RPM Strip, the free plugin is worth having today.
